December 2007 - Trout Fishing and Wolf Creek

Rio Grande River Trout Habitat Improved

After years of planning and fundraising, the project to enhance trout habitat in the Rio Grande River near South Fork is nearing completion. Several groups, including Trout Unlimited, sponsored the project to strategically arrange boulders and dig holes forming pools for brown and rainbow trout. The improvements were made in the Coller State Wildlife Area along a 2.3 mile stretch of the Rio Grande River northwest of South Fork. A project like this has already been successful in the Conejos River. Adding this habitat to the nearby Gold Medal rated trout waters of the Rio Grande in Del Norte was a natural progression for the sponsors.

Boulders were placed in varying layouts such as crescents, diamonds, V’s and J hooks. The pooling water will provide the trout with more areas to breed and rest. It will also provide deeper water for larger trout to thrive. This is a public access stretch of the Rio Grande for anglers to fish from the banks, wading or rafting.

Wolf Creek Update

The US Forest Service may be nearing a settlement with the environmental groups that are protesting the development. Reports indicate that the 2 roads granted by the Forest Service in 2006 may be changed and the developers may have to generate a new environmental report. No official statement has been made at the time of this newsletter.

The Wolf Creek Ski Area itself has received a large amount of snowfall opening the entire ski area. To date, the mountain has received 203 inches of snow with a base depth of 80 inches.
