March 2007 - Crane Festival, Village at Wolf Creek Forum and Outdoor Clubs
Monte Vista Crane Festival
The annual migration of the Sandhill Crane stopped in Monte Vista once again for the annual Monte Vista Crane Festival. Over 20,000 Sandhills were expected, along with whooping cranes, waterfowl and even bald eagles. As described by avid bird watchers, it is an amazing sight to see such a congregation of birds at one time. Most of the cranes are migrating north from Mexico on their way to Montana and Idaho. In 1953, the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge was established to ensure protection of their migratory habitat and this year celebrates the 24th annual Crane Festival. Village at Wolf Creek Public Forum
A public forum was held last month to allow the public to ask questions and make comments on the proposed Village at Wolf Creek. Opponents voiced their concerns over the water quality leaving the site and the strain it would put on the area’s water supply. The developers pointed to research that shows the Village would consume the same amount of water as one pivot sprinkler used for irrigation. They also ensured the water quality would exceed state standards.
Another important issue was the effect on the local economy. An accounting firm estimated tax revenues of $2 million for the first 2 years. By year 20, the total tax revenue would be $237 million with nearly $20 million in annual revenue. With such an impact, local residents who want to see the Valley grow and diversify have become major supporters of the new ski village.
Outdoor Recreation Clubs Making an Impact
Two local recreational clubs are working hard to promote outdoor fun in the valley while keeping trails safe for those to enjoy. The Silver Thread Outdoor Club and the Powder Busters Club of South Fork together groom over 400 miles of trails per year for snowmobiling, 4 wheeling, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Along with their efforts to maintain the trails, these clubs also offer group trips and guided tours.
