News - February 2008Village at Wolf Creek SetbackA settlement has been reached in the lawsuit filed by Colorado Wild against the developers of the Village at Wolf Creek and the US Forest Service. According to reports, the developers will need a new Environmental Impact Study (EIS) that will take into account more factors expected to influence the local environment. The new EIS will be conducted by the Forest Service instead of a third party firm. The Forest Service said it should take about 18 months to complete. The developers are still pursuing the 275 acre development despite the delays. Access was originally granted by the Forest Service in April 2006 for two roads. That access was contested by Colorado Wild on the basis that the information in the EIS used to grant the access was insufficient and under the influence of the developers. The new EIS will reportedly have more analysis of the wetlands, water quality and traffic impacts to the area.
Water, Snow and More Water2008 has started off as a great year for farmers, skiers and potentially, the Rio Grande County economy. Signs of the drought we endured for the past 2 years are gone . . . . replaced by a deep snowpack in the San Juan Mountains and Wolf Creek Pass that will eventually melt off and irrigate the valley below. The snowpack is currently at 160% above the normal levels for the area. The Wolf Creek Ski Area has already received 458 inches of snow YTD and has a base depth of 152 inches at the summit. With much of the local economy still dependent on agriculture, the abundance of water should make for an excellent crop season.
