September 2006 - Flyfishing on the Rio Grande

Flyfishing on the Rio Grande River

A popular fly fishing festival was held in South Fork this month for fishing enthusiasts. The festival held fly tying and casting lessons for those eager to fish the local Gold Medal trout waters. The Gold Medal trout waters of the Rio Grande River, running from Del Norte through South Fork, are another reason why this area is becoming a tourist destination. The Colorado Wildlife Commission designates a river or stream as “Gold Medal” if it offers exceptional opportunities to grow and catch large trout. Only 168 miles of the 9,000+ miles of trout streams in Colorado are included in this exclusive class. This designation represents the highest quality trout habitat, such as deep water pools, that Colorado has to offer.

Fly fishing on the Rio Grande can be enjoyed from several access points along the river. Bank fishing, wading and rafting are all options for trying to hook a trophy fish. While there are a few exceptions, the specie of trout most often caught includes brown, brook and rainbow. In addition, local officials have recently placed many large boulders into the river to provide more habitats for the fish and to promote fly fishing.

Heavy summer rains have made up for a dry Spring

In past newsletters I have reported how the low rainfall this year has hurt the local crops of potato, hay and alfalfa. That has all changed this summer as the skies have opened up for the valley and provided abundant rainfall for the farmers. This is a great sign for the local economy as much of the area is still dependant on agribusiness. While we may appreciate the rain for bringing color to the valley, the importance of annual precipitation levels are key to the farmers’ way of life.
