April 2006 - Forest Service grants access to Wolf Creek

Forest Service grants access to the Village at Wolf Creek!

The Village at Wolf Creek is one big step closer to becoming a reality. The Forest Service granted access to the development via 2 roads across forest land. Forest Supervisor Peter Clark designated a 750 foot road, to be named “Snowshed Road”, as the main access from Highway 160. Clark also designated a 250 foot road, called “Tranquility Road”, as access for shuttles and emergency vehicles. Although the road design is more costly than what the developers had originally hoped for, they are still pleased with the decision.

The Ski Village has become a polarizing issue among locals and politicians in Colorado. Opponents feared the environmental impacts outweighed the benefit from establishing such a large development. This latest decision is a major victory for the developer, who plans to use the 287 acres to help Wolf Creek evolve into a full amenity ski resort. The result will have a tremendous financial impact to the Town of South Fork, since it is the nearest municipality. An influx of jobs and tourists should give South Fork a big financial boost and a great deal of exposure to those outside of the valley.

The Wolf Creek Ski Area is now closed for the season. It finished with 342 inches of snowfall and a base of 100 inches. This season’s totals are down from their average because of the dry winter experienced by the entire region. In contrast, last year was one of their best years with over 500 inches of snowfall. Wolf Creek remains a top destination for those looking for powder skiing and is also attractive from a cost perspective with daily lift tickets at only $45.

The Rio Grande Golf Club reopens this month for golfers to enjoy one of the best course layouts in the country. At an elevation of 8,000 feet, club selection can be tricky as you traverse the winding front nine and the heavily contoured back nine. The facilities are another great quality of the club. The clubhouse, practice area, pool and tennis courts are always in excellent condition.

Xcel Energy announced it will be building the state's largest solar power plant northeast of Monte Vista. The plant will be constructed on 80 acres and should be completed by the end of 2007. The San Luis Valley is an ideal location for a solar power plant due to the abundant sunshine the area receives on a daily basis. In addition to the energy it will supply to the area, the plant will export surplus energy outside of the valley.
