July 2005 - Why we came to the Valley
We came to the Rio Grande / San Luis Valley area because we could see a major shift of the economy from the agricultural activities on the valley floor to a tourist port and recreation economy in a "Golden Y" with Creede to the northwest, Wolf Creek to the southwest and the most golden part from South Fork to Alamosa.
Here are some of the latest developments:
Wolf Creek Village development is underway. Wolf Creek Village will accommodate up to 10,000 residents and provide shopping, food and other benefits. Soil testing and basic engineering has begun for the 287 acres. The manager is quoted as saying construction could start "soon" and that the first phase could open in 2006".
The developer of the Rio Grande Golf and Fishing Club is in the process of buying 2,100 acres of the Hanna Ranch. The ranch is on the Rio Grande River, about 6 miles east of South Fork. These people have shown a solid history of creating and selling mid to high end parcels. They are the leaders in raising the image (and value) of this whole area. Thank you.
The county and city governments are seriously working towards a coordinated approach to planning and development. The Rio Grande County Commission is charged with the largest area of responsibility; however, the cities/towns of Monte Vista, Del Norte and South Fork contain most of the population, most of the capital and most of the business establishments. Then throw in various water authorities and environmental agencies and you can see how important the coordination will be. The County now has a Building Department Supervisor/Inspector and new ordinances such as on-site trash, etc. which will be of great help.
