October 2005 - Local building prices and Adams State College

Building prices are reportedly at $50 per sq/ft under that of Aspen, Vail, etc. The High-end homes at the Rio Grande Club in South Fork are being constructed at $125 to $200 per sq/ft. Builders are searching the surrounding area for subcontractors in efforts to keep pace with demand.

Plans for another golf course are in the works between South Fork and Del Norte. The proposed site is 300 acres along the Rio Grande River.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife continues to issue hunting licenses for elk in hopes of controlling the population. The DOW estimates that there are between 3,000 and 5,000 elk in the valley with a ratio of 23 bulls to every 100 cows. The deer population has rebounded from recent seasons, however moose hunting is strictly regulated.

Adams State College in nearby Alamosa has released their Fall theatre schedule. Two of the most anticipated plays include “Dead Man Walking”, originating from the book and movie, and “Underpants”, a comedy written by Steve Martin. Adams State College is a 4 year school offing bachelor or arts and science degrees in 16 different fields. For more information about Adams State College, please visit www.adams.edu.

The Great Sand Dunes National Park just celebrated their first anniversary as a National Park. Located in the northeast corner of the San Luis Valley, the park contains over 30 square miles of dunes, some reaching 750 feet high!  Attendance at the park rose by 6% from 2004.
